Each private possessions, whether it is a spacious suburban manor or a small summer cottage, should have an entrance. This is the first thing that any passerby or acquaintance sees, who decided to look at the visit, so the entrance must be arranged properly, putting a strong and beautiful gate. You can buy it in the store, but often the dimensions of the input opening are non -standard, so it’s easier and cheaper to make a wooden gate with your own hands. Why is it wooden? Read about this and much more in our article.
The choice of materials
In order for the gate to turn out to be truly beautiful and durable, it is necessary not only to choose the right material for its construction, but also to be able to handle it. Since the gate will be constantly in the open air and undergo tests of rains, snow, heat and temperature differences, it is necessary to choose a sufficiently wear -resistant wood of wood and process it thoroughly.
What wood species can be built from:
- larch;
- pine;
- cedar;
- spruce;
- oak;
- alder;
- chestnut;
- beech.
Pine and spruce will cost you the cheaper, but in very hot weather, gates of these conifers can exude resin and accidentally stain you. The best option is larch, since it is very durable, easy to process and does not die as pine. The cedar gate is also good, but its cost will turn out high, unless, of course, you live on the edge of the cedar boron. As for deciduous rocks, the most beautiful and durable gates are obtained from oak, but working with this breed requires skill. Books are better not to use, because from constant getting wet and temperature differences, it will quickly crack and crumble. But if there is an opportunity to build a wooden gate and a gate of glued beam, this will be the best solution.
Coniferous woods are beckoned with their cheapness and accessibility, but they have one large general drawback - they will die. In such a material there are always resin pockets and moves, and it is not always possible to see them. If, nevertheless, the resin is on the surface, it can be carefully removed by some household solvents, one of which is found in any household: ethyl alcohol, gasoline, acetone (a remedy for removing varnish from the nails), caustic or calcified soda, Potash.
Useful advice: experts recommend buying a ready -made (cut and processed) lumber, which was carefully dried and cut into elements of equal thickness.
If you plan to buy unprocessed wood, prepare an electric or manual rubble. In addition, you will need tools for working with wood: hacksaw, rashpil, screwdriver, hammer, etc.
The correct processing of wood products before putting them into operation in the open air also plays a very important role. It is necessary to thoroughly skip the surface with sandpaper, and then cover with antiseptic stain and several layers of atmosphere transparent varnish or paint. In the case of the finish coating with a transparent or tinted varnish, the stain can act as a toner to give wood a darker and noble shade. Yacht varnish and PF-170 on an alkyd basis have proven itself best.
Production of a wooden gate
Anyone who knows how to hold a hammer and drill in their hands is capable of making a wooden gate, but there are several recommendations that will help to perform work faster and get the highest quality result. Firstly, do not forget about the old rules of carpenters and seamstresses, stating that it is better to spend a little more time and measure seven times before cutting off. The marking of the details of the structure plays a decisive role. Secondly, prepare all the necessary materials in advance. For the construction of a wooden gate, not only wood, but also supporting pillars, loops, locks and other metal fittings will be needed. The nature of the elements depends on whether you make a decorative gate or reliable shut -off gates designed to protect the territory from the penetration of outsiders.
The easiest way is to make wooden gates and picket fants. These are ready -made and sawn boards that only need to be attached to the frame and fit under the desired dimensions. However, if you have access to inexpensive lumber, you can reduce construction costs without sacrificing the quality of the result.
What materials will be needed for the construction of a wooden gate for the fence:
- boards 200x14x2 cm - 10 pcs;
- boards - 200x15x5 cm - 2 pcs;
- steel loops - 2 pcs;
- sHKKOLDA - 1 pc;
- pen - 1 pc;
- tough steel plates - 6 pcs;
- brass plates - 4 pcs;
- steel corner - 1 pc;
- wood screws;
- wooden primer;
- morilka;
- atmospheric varnish.
Boards 5 cm thick is better to buy pine ones, as they are cheaper and will be used to create supports. The main plane of the gate will be built of boards 2 cm thick, and it is better to choose them from larch or glued beam. From the tools you will need a screwdriver or a screwdriver, a rubble and a jigsaw (electric or manual), a knife -haired woman, a chisel, sandpaper of medium grain (No. 2,3) water construction level, roulette or centimeter.
How to make a wooden gate:
- The gate should be recorded strictly vertically and maintain this position even with strong winds or mechanical loads. To do this, it must be fixed on two reference poles. Aerated concrete pillars are best suited for this purpose. In order to drive them into the ground, digging the recesses with a garden drill just below the level of freezing of the soil. In the space between the walls of the recess and pillars, tamp the soil or pour river sand. In order for the gate to stand for as long as possible, before installing the pillars on the bottom of each pit, you need to pour 10-15 cm of large sand or crushed stone so that they remove excess moisture.
- The sidewalls, to which the gate itself will be attached, will be made by their two pine boards 5 cm thick. Explate them strictly vertically using the building level, and then attach self -tapping screws to the support pillars.
- Take 4 boards 2 cm thick and collect a rectangular frame from them. Fix the buildings of the structure with brass planks, screwing them with brass screws.
- To increase the rigidity of the structure, use steel gear plates. In the process of installation, they must be slightly drowned in wood so that moisture will not be delayed on them, provoking corrosion and driving wood.
- Burn the loops onto the frame that will hold the door of the gate.
- Try the frame to the opening (it should be freely placed there), then make a subcase to even more enhance the rigidity of the structure. Fix the brace based on the remaining steel gear plates.
- When the frame is ready, connect it to the hinges and overthrow it with the remaining boards. To fix each board, use at least 2 self -tapping screws, fix the corner elements at least 3 screws. Before installing each screw, make a hole with a drill of the corresponding diameter. If you start to screw it right away, the wood will crack, and the work will be spoiled. The hat of each screw must be drowned a little in the wood so that the surface is flat.
- Attach the cheek and pen.
- If you want to make the gate more neat and beautiful, you can cut its top in a circle. To do this, build an elementary compass, tied a lace to a pencil. Press the free end of the lace with your hand to the center of the gate, and draw a pencil with a pencil along the upper edge so as to make a semicircle marking. Cut the boards with an electric jigsaw in accordance with the indicated line.
- The main part of the work is completed, but it is too early to enjoy a well -deserved rest - you must immediately start finishing wood so that humidity or insect pests cannot spoil your work. First of all, all sharp corners and irregularities must be sanded with sandpaper. If there is a grinder on the farm, the work will go faster. With its help, you can smooth out all the corners, thereby reducing the injury and increasing the aesthetics of the product.
- After grinding, brush the dust with a damp (not wet!) A rag and cover the structure with a stain. How many layers of the stain to apply is solved only to you, but the more there will be, the darker the texture of the wood will become. Between the application of each subsequent layer, take a break of 30-40 minutes.
- When the stain dries, you can apply a primer on wood. The primer in this case is necessary to reduce the consumption of paint and varnishes and increase the protective characteristics.
- After drying the primer, cover the entire wooden surface with atmospheric varnish or paint. If the family has artists, you can apply a beautiful painting with acrylic or gouache paints, and then cover it with varnish. Such a beautiful wooden gate will delight you for many years.
An alternative way of manufacturing is a simple, but at the same time quite a neat and beautiful wood gate:
There are many types of wooden gates, and the instructions above describe one of the simplest. If you want to increase the durability and strength of the structure, you can strengthen it with sheet metal. To protect against corrosion and moisture above the entrance, you can organize a neat canopy or visor. Then all metal elements will last much longer, and in which case you will not have to poke around in the castle under the heavy rain.
It is also a great opportunity to demonstrate the ability to handle chisels - carved wooden gates and gates always look very beautiful, even if they are made of cheap wood. If you do not know how to handle similar artistic tools, but really want to decorate the gate with carved details, you can attach carved wooden moldings or platbands to the canvas. However, in the first and second cases, it must be understood that moisture and small garbage will be more strongly linger in carved elements, and therefore they will automatically become foci of rotting of wood. The smaller and elegant the thread, the higher the risk of destruction. To extend the life of such a gate, it is necessary to regularly clean it of garbage and annually update the protective paints and varnishes.
Wooden gates: photo
You can make wooden gates not only from purchased boards - very original and beautiful designs are obtained from woody branches subject to minimal mechanical processing. If you live near the sea, you can collect on the shore a branches shined by waves and salted with water and build an unusual fence from them.
If there is no sea nearby, you can simply build a picket fence or a tyn in an old style. Such fences and gates look very authentic and comfortable:
