Features of choosing a bathroom countertop
The countertop under the sink in the bathroom should be practical and functional, increase the useful space of the room, and also be combined with the designer performance of the room.
It is known that the operational conditions in the bathroom are not the most favorable for furniture and interior decoration. There is increased humidity, constant fluctuations in air temperature, and water spray that falls on the surrounding objects. Therefore, to the countertop under the sink, as well as to other interior items, certain requirements are imposed:
- resistance to water, moisture, steam;
- hygiene, anti -corrosion properties;
- resistance to chemical environments, including to detergents;
- practicality;
- functionality;
- external attractiveness, compatibility with interior style;
- simplicity of care.
The material from which your countertop will be made must correspond to all these parameters. Finished products, as a rule, take into account such requirements, but the purchase of countertops can not be affected by everyone. In this case, you can make a similar interior item yourself.

Creating a countertop for a sink in a bathroom with your own hands
Preparatory work
- It is advisable to purchase materials only when you made the necessary measurements and drew a schematic image of the future design. Pay attention to pipes or a crane, if any are built into the wall on the site of the countertop, be sure to provide openings for them, calculate their size and depth.
- The first stage of the work includes the preparation of the hole for the sink. Take the material for the frame, for example, drywall, put on an even and not shaky surface. Dismate the sink, put it upside down on a drywall sheet, preferably in the center of the future frame. With a pencil, circle the sink along the contour. Then take away 2 cm along the entire circle to make the countertop stable. Cut the workpiece with a knife or an electrician.
- If you decide to make a countertop in a bathroom with your own hands, you can choose a form of completely any, whether it is a strict geometric figure or a fantasy silhouette. If you are a beginner and are not confident enough, do not complicate the work and stop in a square or rectangular form - it is easier to make and process it.
- It is not so simple to work with rounded outlines, firstly, they are not so stable, and secondly, external sections are glued for a long time and problematic.
Carpet frame processing
- The frame for the countertop in the bathroom should be properly protected from moisture, only after that it can be mounted. Plywood, wood and drywall are highly exposed to water, especially in sections of sections. So the internal sections must be secured with special rails glued to waterproof glue. External side sections must be wiped with sandpaper, covered with moisture -resistant primer.
- Prepared the frame can be installed in place. It is either attached directly to the wall, or put on a cabinet or support. It is convenient to fix the base on special metal corners that withstand a large weight. The corners themselves are fixed on the wall with reliable dowels. The side and front covers of the countertops are fixed with self -tapping screws.
- The frame for the design can be made from profile pipes that are cut into fragments of the required length, welded around the perimeter of the future countertop and fixed on the wall. The substrate on such a frame is fixed using bolts.
- After installing the frame of the countertop, you can decorate with finishing material.
Do -it -yourself
Tiles are relatively cheap, but practical and easy to care for facing material. The process of finishing the countertop we describe in stages:
- First, cover the frame of the structure with a primer and dried.
- Then we prepare a cement-sand mixture with a slight addition of glue as desired.
- Around the hole intended for the sink, put the beacons. Then apply the solution to the countertop. After drying the cement-sand mixture, we remove the beacons, and the surface is smoothed with a spatula.
- After 5-6 hours, we cover with puttings with putty and leave for 3 days.
- After 3 days, the workpiece can be lined with tiles. We begin the process from the wall and move to the edge of the structure. Lubricate the back of the tiles with glue, well crush them to the surface. We check the evenness of the styling.
- We glue the tiles on the edges or use a special border.
- The speaker is immediately cleaned with a spatula. Then we leave the tile until completely dry.
- The final stage is the grout of the seams. For such a purpose, it is best to use the epoxy composition, but its excess must be wiped immediately after applying the mixture.
In the same way, you can make a countertop with your own hands in a bathroom made of mosaic or porcelain tile.
Bathroom concrete countertop
Concrete is another type of economical and practical material. To make such a design, prepare a form for filling. It should correspond to the outlines and size of the frame, and the shape can be built from plywood or chipboard.
- You can show imagination and add to the concrete mixture, for example, particles of colored glass or some pigments. Concrete, which should be used for countertops, should be 400 or 500 stamps, and sand, small granite, gravel are suitable for filler.
- Having prepared the solution, fill the mold to half. At the location of the hole for the future countertop, pre -set a circle through which concrete will not leak. In this form, leave the structure for 1 day.
- After a day, prepare a new portion of the solution by adding something to decoration: paints, glass, pebbles, particles of bat tiles, etc. Fill in the remaining space of the form and let the concrete freeze for 3 days.
- The dried counterattack must be sanded with coarse -grained sandpaper, wipe small pores with fresh concrete solution, then dried and twist several times with small sandpaper. Such a polished product can be mounted on the frame.
Artificial stone countertop
A simple option for finishing the bathroom countertop is an artificial acrylic stone facing. It is released in sheets, and the process of working with it is quite simple. For facing the countertop under the sink, 3 mm thick material is quite enough. You can fix the acrylic stone on any frame - plywood, drywall, wooden. For installation, epoxy or two -component glue should be used. The adhesive composition must simply be applied to the base with a gear spatula, then attach a sheet to the surface and crush it well.
To drive out air bubbles from under the material, start pressing in the center and advance to the edges. After grasping the composition, you can align the ends of the countertop with sandpaper. Leaving, paste the end sides with the remains of the material. In the case when the countertop is curved, to give the desired form an acrylic stone can be heated and bend.
Artificial marble countertop
Another option for performing a countertop in a bathroom under the sink with your own hands is to make it from artificial marble. For work, you will need:
- polyurethane form;
- water;
- sand;
- paints and brushes;
- cement;
- pebbles;
- gelkout;
- polyethylene film.
First you need to prepare a solution of artificial marble. Mix sand, pebbles and cement with water and plasticizer, add the pigment. Using a construction mixer, turn it all into a monotonous mass, if necessary, pouring water.
Lubricate the polyurethane form for pouring with a helkout, dry. Pour the solution into it, remove the remains with a spatula and cover with polyethylene. The artificial marble countertop will freeze for 10 hours.
On a finished countertop, you can mount the sink, previously covering its edges with a sealant. By setting the sink, check if it is tightly fixed. If not, then smear the necessary places with glue. After a day, the sealant will freeze, and the design will be ready for use.
Tips for decorating countertops in the bathroom
When decorating countertops, you can show imagination and use a variety of decorative elements. For example, real or artificial shells, colored stones, coins are perfect for such a goal. They are pressed in a still raw layer of cement mortar, and after drying they are covered with varnish. Of the details, you can lay out a drawing or ornament.
You can give the structure an unusual texture, as when working with decorative plaster.
Features of caring for the countertop in the bathroom
- Caring for the countertops made of natural stone, they need to be covered from time to time with special impregnation. This tool after drying forms a protective film, and water is not absorbed into the stone.
- It is enough to simply wipe the countertops with a glossy surface with a damp cloth or wash with a soap solution. In this case, abrasive agents should not be used.
- Glass countertops are cleaned with mirrors and windows.
- Wood helps to protect oil from moisture. They are impregnated with heated material from time to time.
- The countertop in the bathroom from chipboard or fiberboard is not the best option, since both material cannot tolerate moisture. After each use of the sink, the countertop will have to be wiped dry with a rag.
