The attic is a superstructure of the housing of the upper floor under the roof itself. Due to its location, this room has a lot of structural features. All these features leave an imprint not only on the general arrangement of the attic, but also on the decor of its windows.

Features of the design of the attic
Since the attic is located directly under the roof itself, there are many features in its design that directly affect the windows themselves. First of all, we are talking about a slope that determines the shape of the room. In a house with a single -sided roof, the attic has one wall at an angle, in a house with a gable roof - two. The windows in this case are constructed in the slope itself, they will be inclined. In the second version, the windows are made in the direct front of the room, but most often they have the wrong shape. All these nuances are reflected in the subsequent design of the window.
When designing the premises, the attic takes into account the fact of the wrong form. Direct lines and classic solutions are inappropriate here. Optimally, irregular and uneven lines in all decor elements are suitable for this room. Mansard windows are decorated with cornices, but you will also require many additional elements that will be described below.
Types of attic windows
Due to the unusual shape of the room, the attic windows during the production and installation project require a special approach. But the plus in this situation is that it is possible to experiment with forms, sizes and modifications.
The attic window can create in the room a unique stylish image that will completely transform it. The standard location of the window is at an angle to the wall directly in the plane of the roof. The height from the floor is chosen arbitrarily and does not have certain exact standards. The same applies to the number of structural elements of the windows, they are made arbitrarily a lot, any arbitrary shape and method of opening. In general, the attic windows are divided into such groups:
- Classic windows in the attic roof. This design is mounted directly in the slope. Windows are located in this version only at an angle, at any convenient height. The area and design are selected arbitrarily.
- Vertical attic windows. They are mounted in the roof slope, but not under an inclination, but in an upright position. This is carried out using a visor, which cover the window on the roof. Such a visor, as it were, grows from a roof slope with a square box. On the inside, the window will have a very deep slope. The amount of light passing through such a window is much less than through ordinary inclined structures, but it gives wide possibilities in the decor. Vertical attic windows have a variety of dimensions, in some cases they are transformed into a small balcony.
- Facade or cornice window. If we consider from the point of view of technical terminology, then this window is not attic, since its installation is carried out as classic. Such windows are installed in the preat under the roof, they are located at right angles and are used as panoramic. The design starts from the gender or at a different height. The disadvantage of the cornice window is that due to the structural features of the room, it does not pass a large amount of light into it. Advantages - the ability to use the window as classic, put flowers on the windowsill and observe through it everything that happens on the street. Often facade windows are balcony blocks with a door that lead to an open veranda or balcony. An interesting structural solution is a straight exit from the attic through the facade door. In this case, the balcony will be equipped with an external staircase leading to the street. The possibility of installing such a design is due to the number of storey of the building.
- Windows transforming into the balcony. A curious design, which, thanks to its cunning opening and closing system, easily turn into a balcony. At the same time, the sash forms a small platform or does without it. A very convenient solution that helps to adjust the room to different seasons and weather conditions. In the summer of the year, when a large flow of air into the room is needed, the windows are transformed into the balcony and provide it. In the winter season, the entire structure is tightly closed and ensures the thermal insulation of the attic. Another advantages of this design - it does not require seasonal insulation, as in the case of a conventional balcony.
- Light tunnel. If in some rooms the attic cannot be installed a full -fledged window, then the light tunnel will come to the rescue. Most often, this method of conducting light in the attic is resorted to if the roof design does not allow other windows. For example, if there is a thick layer from the technical space, ceilings and beams between the attic ceiling and the roof covering that cannot be dismantled. The light tunnel looks like an ordinary pipe that goes to the roof at one end, and the other into the room. To increase the light flow, the pipe is equipped with a scattering plafon.
- Combined windows. If the structural features of the room do not allow you to install a larger number of windows, then the output will be an increase in the size of existing ones. In this case, a cornice window with facade is combined. The window is extended to the end of the roof slope and in this place is complemented by a small facade insert. Such a design will pass more light into the room and, moreover, will very unusually complement the interior. The disadvantage of this design is only that with the design you will have to tinker. Demonstrates such attic windows photo below.
Features of attic windows
The attic windows distinguishes a lot from ordinary. First of all, it is the very shape of a window, which is rarely rectangular and often has many samplers. Secondly, in this part of the house, openings are often located at an angle. Thirdly, the windows on the roof have a special opening and closing system that corresponds to the function they perform. The window frame turns, leans back or performs both of these actions at once. The opening mechanism is equipped with closers and latches, which hold an open frame in an open state. Some designs allow you to expand the frame by 360 degrees, without removing it from the loops.
They leave an imprint on the design of attic windows and the features of the room itself. Since it is located directly in the open air, the windows pass a larger amount of light, and with it heat. Therefore, windows on the roof are especially carefully protected, so as not to pass the heat in the summer. This protection is expressed in a special coating density, which is used for curtains. All designs are equipped with a system that allows you to clean them by letting the light into the room, or to lower it back.
Due to the fact that the attic windows are at an angle, ordinary systems of curtains and rollers are not applicable to them. For this type of windows, special designs are available, which have many different fasteners and supports that help hold the curtain in the right position relative to the space. Or, on the attic windows, the curtains are installed home -made, and all the fasteners are bought and equipped independently.
Boarding of an attic window
The simplest and most standard options for decorating the attic window are blinds or curtains. There are many options and styles applicable in this case. As for the window itself, when designing, you should first determine that it is necessary to protect from the sun, hacking or as a decorative element. As protection from the Sun, external shutters or rollers are the best option. These designs are installed inside, but in this case the glass itself will warm up, and with it the entire room.
External rollers play the role of the heat screen in the cold season, do not release heat from the room. Another advantage of rollers is to protect the window from mechanical damage and the soundproofing of the attic. Their downside is that when performing protective functions, they are not an element of decor.
Another option for protection from the Sun is the marquise. These are nets made of thin material that pass the light, but at the same time disperse it, reducing heat entering the room. They also perform an additional role of a mosquito net, if installed as an additional screen. When opening the window, the marquise remains in place, and if necessary, it is easily curled up and removed.
An alternative option for decorating attic windows - internal shutters of various types and designs. When designing an attic window with your own hands, it is possible to make and install shutters of any shape and configuration. The only nuance that needs to be thought out is to install the mounting for sash on inclined windows. For example, install ordinary hooks or bolts that will hold the wings against the wall and not let them hang down.
The attic windows are improved using linings - additional sections of the window. For example, an additional semicircular upper section is made in a rectangular opening, which gives the window a mysterious look of a medieval loophole. The overlays are made deaf or opening, in this case they play the role of the window to ventilate the room in bad weather. The best decorative elements for a ready -made window are curtains and blinds.
Blinds on attic windows
The blinds are the simplest in installation and operation by the decor of attic windows. Due to their design, they are suitable for inclined structures, for simple forms or complex. The main advantage of this design is that it is attached directly to the frame and does not interfere with opening the windows in any position. This is especially true for those types of windows that are not opened in the standard version, but unfold or spin. The second important advantage is the ability to easily adjust the amount of air entering the premises.
Both classic blinds and pliss are suitable for windows on the attic. This design is an accordion that is assembled from below, from above or simultaneously in two directions. For windows of a non -standard form, pliss is simply indispensable, as they are made in a variety of configurations.
The third type of blinds is roller curtains. By design, they are similar to classic blinds, only their basis is made not of dense horizontal or vertical strips, but from a solid piece of fabric.
Rolled curtains are a cross between ordinary curtains and classic blinds. For inclined attic windows, roller curtains are attached over the entire height of the window, thanks to this there is no need to use special mounts to hold the structure in the right position. Such a mounting system does not leave gaps on the sides of a closed curtain. When the curtain is opened, it slips into a dense tube in the upper part of the window, the opening level is adjusted manually. In a folded state, the roller curtain on the window is almost invisible.
Tricks for the attic window
Ordinary curtains for the window on the attic are not the most optimal and convenient option. Due to the design features of these windows, installing curtains on them is quite problematic. But if the curtains are selected as the decor, then they are installed using some tricks.
- The first option for installing the curtains on the attic window is the use of two cornices. This is especially true for inclined windows. One cornice serves as the holder and is attached at the top of the window. The second cornice is necessary to hold the curtains in the right position, it does not allow it to fall vertically down. The location of the second cornice is selected individually, depending on the design and size of the window. For example, if these are inclined windows that end near the beginning of the straight wall, then it is optimal to place the second cornice on the corner, where the inclined wall goes straight. This arrangement will create a composition along an inclined window and form beautiful folds below. The distance between the cornice and the wall should be taken into account, it should be enough to tightly press the curtain and prevent it from slipping out of the mount.
- Another option for the location of the curtain on two cornices is holes. At the level of the second cornice in the fabric, holes are made through which the curtain is strung on the cornice. This design allows you to easily push the curtain and fix it in the position. If the window is small, then the cornice is placed in its very bottom and the curtain is pulled between the two mounts tightly enough so that it does not hang down. To fix the fabric on the cornice, Velcro is also used, which allow you to create any, even the most complex compositions.
So that the curtains reliably hold on the second cornice and do not slide, they are attached with eyelets, seizures or tied with knots.
Grasps and eyelets are not just a fastening part, but also an element of decor, which is selected based on the general composition of the curtain. The installation of a mechanized system, which controls both the window itself and its decor elements itself, is relevant.
As for the fabric of curtains for attic windows, there are no certain rules here. Place dense heavy fabrics or light tulle curtains. The only recommendation to choose a curtain is to pay attention to the material with a foil coating that will delay heat from sunlight.
