Making a drywall arch with your own hands will not be difficult. It will expand the space of the room and can take any, even the most bizarre shape.
The advantages of arches
Specialists find it difficult to list all the advantages of arches. The result will depend on the option of its finish. The main objective of the construction of arches is not to protect one room from another, but on the contrary to connect them visually.
When planning space with arches, architects try to think through every step in order to get away from many years of stereotypes. So, now it is not customary to install the door to the living room. It is better to make an arch to get a feeling of a single space.
Also, if you build an arch of drywall between the living room and the kitchen, then the transition will look more harmonious. In addition, you can freely move from one room to another. The manufacture of drywall arches will significantly expand the space of the room.
Types of drywall arches
There are a lot of forms of arches. First of all, you need to decide which you need.
There are such forms of arches:
- Active.
- Passive.
The active forms of arches include structures of complex shape through which several rooms can be seen at once. Such designs are considered more than a decorative element. Their complexity will depend on the interior of the room.
The passive arch has a simple design. Usually such an arch can be seen in small apartments or small rooms in area.
Consider the main types of interior arches made of drywall.
- Classical arch. It is also called round. It is considered the most practical and is suitable for any room. The classic arch harmoniously fits into any interior. The designs will look advantageous, which have a small deflection. Massive and wide will also decorate the room, but at the same time they must correspond to the design of the room. Of the shortcomings of such arches, it can be noted that such a design will take the height of the opening, which is especially important in small rooms.
- "Modern" or segmented arch. It has an original design. Such a decorative element is suitable for the doorway in a large room. The perfect place for location is opposite the window. It goes well with ceilings and walls with small relief. Suitable for wide openings with thick walls. To highlight and emphasize the beauty of the arch, it is advisable to perform wood trim.
- The arch “Portal” is simultaneously original and simple to execute. It is created on the basis of a carrier wall or partition to decorate the doorway, which is why the door arch from drywall was called. Often such a design is installed if the door is not needed. After it is dismantled, free space is decorated with wood panels, mirrors, niches, shelves are built and lighting elements are added.
- The arch "Romance". It is less common than previous species. The design has two roundings and a flat part at the top. It looks very advantageous. Among the advantages of such an arch, a small consumption of building material is noted.
- Semi -air. Stylish and popular option. This form is more often chosen by young married couples. It differs in that it can have a different circle or only one rounded angle.
The design of drywall arches may have the following types:
- lancet. For lovers of Gothic style. Two planes of the arch converge at an angle, forming the upper point of the structure;
- the openwork arch differs in that in its upper part and on both sides, through holes can be located;
- the designer arch has several levels. It differs in the design of an intricate shape. It is almost impossible to do it yourself, because in addition to imagination, you need to have experience working with drywall.
How to make an arch from drywall
For the construction of the arch, we will use drywall. This building material has several advantages:
- affordable price;
- easily mounted;
- the design is light, so it does not carry additional load on the wall.
Attention! If the height of the doorway is less than two meters, then making the arch is undesirable, because it will take part of the space. It will simply be more advisable to round the corners of the doorway.
Materials and tools
For installation of drywall arches, you will need:
- drywall sheets (use special, sheet thickness - 6.5 millimeters);
- metallic profile;
- dowel;
- screws (size 3.5 by 25 millimeters and 4.2 by 13 millimeters);
- construction knife for drywall;
- scissors for metal;
- pliers;
- level;
- pencil or marker;
- drill;
- screwdriver or screwdriver;
- punch;
- needle roller;
- duct tape;
- gypsum putty and spatula;
- sandpaper;
- corner (for the design of the edge of the arch);
- primer mixture;
- paint (or wallpaper).
First, prepare the opening. The door frame needs to be dismantled completely. If necessary, the space can be slightly increased due to the wall. Peel the surface from dust and dirt.
Training
- We start marking. You can use a segment of a plastic skirting board or lining (we need any flexible material). We bend the strip to the shape of the arc and insert it into the prepared hole. We put marks in those places where there will be the edges of the arch.
- We fasten the metal profile. To do this, take the segments of the metal profile and install the guides: on top and on the sides. Place it so that a small recess forms equal to the thickness of the drywall. Make sure that the distance between the right and left profile is the same, otherwise the arch will be distorted.
- We take dowels and insert them into the wall at a distance of 15 centimeters from each other.
- Now you need to install the profile in an arched hole. To do this, take a metal profile. Using scissors for metal, we make rifles and give it the desired shape. The profile is attached to the wall with dowels, and to drywall with screws.
- In order to additionally ensure the rigidity of the frame, in the space between the arcs you need to add several more segments of the metal profile.
Fastening of the side panels
For the side parts of the arch, you can use wall drywall. Marking is performed using a pencil, a home -made circul or a flexible plate. It is better to cut the arc contour with an electrician, a metal file or a sharp construction knife. The side panels of the arch on screws are attached.
How to bend and pickle drywall
- To make a neat bend of drywall and close the end part (lower) of the structure, cut the strip. Its width and length should correspond to the size of the frame.
- Perform accurate measurements. To do this, use a construction flexible meter, add another ten centimeters to the resulting length.
- In order for an arc from an ordinary segment of drywall, it is necessary to moisten it with water from below and walk along the surface with a needle roller. When the surface of the drywall softens slightly, begin to carefully bend it. Fasten the arcuate design to the arch on the adhesive tape and leave until dry. Remember that drywall can not be wetted with water, because it can soften and crack.
- Now it remains to fix the strip with self -tapping screws on both sides. Start fastening the workpiece from the middle.
- Wait for the drywall to dry completely.
If you plan to illuminate the arches from drywall, then at this stage it is necessary to make holes in the drywall for the installation of lighting equipment.
Distributed arches from drywall
After the construction of the arch, it must be prepared for decoration. Using a brush and a primer, it is necessary to process the surface well and leave for 24 hours until completely dry.
There are a lot of options for finishing the plasterboard arch.
Consider the popular:
- decorative mixtures;
- pasting with wallpaper;
- decoration with a decorative stone.
Decoration with decorative plaster
To finish the arch with a decorative mixture, you first need to treat the surface with ordinary putty. Dilute a dry mixture of water (read the proportions on the package) and using a spatula apply the solution with a thin layer. When it dries, irregularities need to be cleaned with sandpaper (or grinding skins) and treat the surface with a primer mixture. Now you can apply a decorative mixture to give the arch to a unique relief.
When decorative plaster completely dries, it can be covered with a thin layer of paint.
The decoration of the arch with wallpaper
It will not be difficult to finish the arch from drywall with wallpaper. Even a beginner can cope with this work.
The work plan to past the arch with wallpaper is as follows:
- Dilute the glue according to the instructions. Make sure that the mixture is homogeneous, without lumps.
- Prepare the strip of the desired size. First you need to stick wallpaper on the wall near the arch. This is necessary so that the next strip covers the arched opening. After gluing the strip, cut the protruding part, leaving for the allowance two to two and a half centimeters.
- Make small cuts on the free region (allowance).
- Bend the wallpaper to the slope and glue it to the surface. Try to press the paper tightly so that the wallpaper does not leave.
- Pour the second side of the arch in the same way.
- It remains to seal the arch of the arch. To do this, cut the strip, the width of which will be equal to the depth of the opening. Its length should be slightly larger than the size of the arch. So it will be easier for you to move the strip to combine the picture.
- Grind the wallpaper with a dry towel to remove air bubbles.
Decoration of the arches with decorative stone
The decoration of the arch with a decorative stone will give the premises nobility. Such an arch will last several decades.
How to make a stone finish:
- For stone decoration, it is not necessary to strive to align the surface perfectly.
- Prepare the solution. Depending on the type of material, its composition may vary slightly. The standard solution consists of sand, glue, lime and cement. If you do not want to make a solution, you can purchase a special glue "liquid nails".
- Take the stone and lay it below - at the junction of the wall and the opening. Press tightly against the wall.
- In order not to close the corners, the stone can be laid on each other “overlap”.
- The stones installed along the arch of the arch should be cut exclusively along its radius. To do this, you can use a grinding machine or nippers.
- The seams are sealed with a solution (it should be sold with a stone).
